Mitosis is....

Alright, it's Monday, so here I go.

Thursday the 6th was that day of 40 degree weather here and so of course it was the same day that I was outside late at night for a few hours at a soccer game. The game was pretty good but so cold! I guess that day was just some weird fluke though or something because right after it it warmed back up to the 60's and it's been pretty consistent ever since. I wasn't able to get any pictures of the mountains covered in snow before it all melted, but now they're turning orange and red from all the trees and it looks pretty cool, so I'll see if I can get a few photos of those.

Friday I went to class like regular and for some reason I remember staying on campus for a long time, but now I don't remember why. That evening Joseph and I went to go see the Divine Comedy show. The whole show was fantastic and it was really fun to be able to see one in person. I was a little bit surprised about how many people were there. I'm pretty sure every seat in the auditorium was full. After the show we went to the casual homecoming dance which was pretty much just like an epicenter dance with older people. I guess there were like 3 or 4 homecoming dances here that week though. Two on Friday and two on Saturday, one formal and one casual. It was fun though.

Saturday my American Heritage group and I went to an apple orchard to do community service. In our class we have to do so many hours on a community service project and then do a report on it in class. What our group chose to do was to work with a program where we to serve with at risk youth and those who have to do government mandated community service in order to I guess show them that it doesn't have to be lame. So we just go and do whatever service they are doing with them and I guess on Saturday they were picking apples. This is the first thing we've done so far with them so I don't know how it'll go, but I've got a bunch of apples now. Later that afternoon I did some homework and then went to the store and then that evening I went to the football game. We were playing against San Hose but I actually only heard one or two "Do you know the way to San Hose" jokes. The game didn't start until 8:15 so it got out at about 11:30. Afterwords I watched probably the cheeziest movie clip I've ever seen from I think "Troll's II" and then went home.

Sunday was pretty typical, I went to church for the better part of my morning and afternoon. That evening, after I had done a little homework, Aaron, Autumn, Autumn's cousin, her friend, and I had breakfast for dinner since Autumn had gone home for the weekend and had come back with a bushel of potatoes. She seemed to not care that since she was in fact raised by potato's this was practically cannibalism. Maybe it was because they were Idaho potatoes and not Irish ones. We made hashbrowns, eggs, toast, homeny, and orange juice.

Monday after class I walked downtown to register to vote. The trip was pretty inconsequential but downtown Provo is about a 40 minute walk away from where I live so it took a little while. I did however get to share the elevator ride up to the registration office with a couple clearly going to get their marriage license. On the way downtown I saw the restorations they're making to the tabernacle/new Provo temple, and historical downtown Provo, which is actually pretty cool since it's really old. When I got home, my roommate's friend who went by Spud, and also happened to be stopping through Utah was over. He was interesting, we discussed classic literature for a while. That evening I did homework and watched The RM.

Tuesday was boring, nothing happened but studying and class.

Wednesday Spud came over again and he and my roommate sat in the dark and talked about I think rape. I don't know, I wasn't particularly paying attention, but it was a little eerie. I studied my brains out for my astronomy mid term and then went with Autumn to see the edited version of Schindler's List. Schindler's List was kind of long (about 3 hours) but it was really good and really sad, especially the end. After the movie was over, Autumn and I made milkshakes and watched Beauty and the Beast, in order to crawl out of the pit of depression and despair Schindler's List had subjected us into. That night my roommate's not boyfriend also came up from Texas to spend the weekend here.

Thursday I studied astronomy, took my  midterm, and went to class. Not Boyfriend was hanging around, so I went to Autumn's who was all too excited to serve me the fried chicken she had just made from scratch. It was pretty awesome. Late that night I suddenly remembered that I still  had to do an astronomy project that was due the next day where I had to recreate the surface of the Earth with flour and test how the height and size of an asteroid influenced it's crater size. An hour later I was done but my entire kitchen, and myself looked like we'd imported half of the north pole. After it was finally cleaned up, I went to bed at about 2:00.

Friday was our first day of live training in Ju Jitsu. I was a little apprehensive about it but aside from mildly intense busing, it was pretty awesometastic. After class Autumn and I decided to use the coupons for a free cupcake that we had got at the rooftop concert over the summer. The cupcake place ended up being 32 blocks away and to get there we had to walk through, college Provo, historical Provo, ghetto Provo, and industrial Provo to get there but it was totally worth the hour long trip. That was possibly the greatest cupcake I've ever had. On the way back, we took a bunch of pictures all over the city including being on the wrong side of the tracks and under a bridge. Hannah joined us and we were going to go to go the the Oktoberfest that was going on but you had to pay to get in and the last thing I payed for something at Brigham Square to get into ended being the incredibly lame rip off of a fair so we decided not to go. Hannah was starving and a little bit delirious so we went to Denny's. While we were at the Wilk, trying to decide if we wanted to go to Oktoberfest, we saw a stack of free bridal guides. Intrigued, we took one to look at it. After flipping through all the pictures, we left it at Denny's for someone who I'm sure is going to need it. It is Provo after all. We went back to Autumn's apartment where we watched the new episode of The Office. After that we built a fort out of blankets, pillows, and stuff and then watched The Others.

Saturday morning Josh came down from USU and he, Joseph, Jessie, and I went to the Mexican Mormon Museum, In N Out, and then back to Jessie's place where we played killer Uno. While we were there we briefly skyped with Spencer and Christine. After a while, the 4 of us plus Jessie's roommate, who was from Puyallup, went to Costco where we wandered around and bought a few things. We headed back to Jessie's where we waited for Ashlynn and the twin sister of Jessie's roommate. Then the 7  of us, all from pretty much the same area, went to Pizza Factory where we had the most intense bread sticks ever! Oh, and pizza too. Upon returning again to Jessie's we discovered that her roommate was having some kind of party, so the twins, Joseph and I went to the common area to play phase 10 and Jessie and Josh went to go plank around campus while Ashlynn has another engagement to attend to. After Josh and Jessie were done planking, they came and played phase 10 with us until we all went home.

Sunday I went to church and then pretty much cleaned all day. We have our cleaning check tonight, and they're kind of intense so, that was my day. That and a little homework.

Today I went to class, bummed around for a little while, went to FHE where we played Mad Gab and ate crepes, did some homework, and finished up the cleaning for my check which is in about half an hour. Oh speaking of homework, I have the most frusterating group project ever but I'll tell you all about it later since this entry is already really long.

Let met explain the title though. When I was younger, I think early middle school or maybe even elementary school, I don't know, but sometime in my early youth I used to watch Sabrina the Teenage Witch. In the seasons where she was in high school there was this ongoing joke that no one ever payed attention in the biology class and the teacher just wanted to teach them what mitosis was. They would always have tests with the question Mitosis is... and no one (or at least not Sabrina and her associates) could ever answer the question. Today in biology we talked about mitosis, so it reminded me of that. Actually, now that I think about it, that may have only been like one or two episodes but for some reason it stuck out in my mind oh well now you know!

Also, for some other totally unrelated reason, talking about Sabrina the Teenage Witch made me want to watch The Adventures of Pete and Pete. That show was weird.

And on another unrelated note, I just remembered that a new restaurant is opening here called the Steak Center. They serve steak, (obviously) and then all of the other types of food that you would get if you were eating a meal at a Stake Center like green bean casserole, green jello, funeral potatoes, and stuff like that. Also, instead of sitting in booths or on chairs you sit on church pews. This sounds to me like the greatest idea ever, almost as good as that place where the main character works in the RM and I'm definitely going to go there some time if I get the chance.

I just realized that most of you reading this aren't familiar with the bombardment in Mormon culture to get married. While of course no one would ever force you or anything people here are always pushing you to be social and go out on dates and stop being single and a menace to society. People here are getting engaged or married all the time and while it's much better now than it was over the summer, people talk about getting married and forming relationships all the time.

Because of this and the fact that people like to lovingly make fun of themselves, there are always a lot of jokes about couples knowing each other for two weeks and then getting married (although I did hear about one time when that actually did happen). Karoline today mentioned a song from Roger and Hammerstein's Cinderella which reminded me of another song from the play that describes I think what it feels like here sometimes.

Here regular world, is a little taste of what romance is like in Utah

In other totally unrelated news, today in ju jitsu we learned how to break our falls by rolling like ninjas.

One Short Day in the Emerald City

Guys, I'm sorry, I fail as a blogger. My last entry was a week ago and that was only a cryptic reference to a t.v. show few people have seen. So, here goes a real entry.

The title of this entry come from the fact that I almost literally had one short day in the Emerald City, except that it was two days and it was in Marysville/Everett/Mill Creek rather than Seattle, but close enough. Last Thursday my grandmother passed away (hence the FMA reference) and so on Saturday my cousin, his wife, their one year old daughter, my other cousin, his wife, and I all piled into a little Ford Taurus and made the 17 hour trip back home for the funeral. We got there a little after 7:00 in the morning and being quite tired I went to bed. I spent Sunday visiting with my relatives and doing a little homework. Monday was the service, which I thought was well done. Afterwards, I spent a little more time with my relations before going home and spending the evening with my immediate family. Tuesday morning all of my cousins and I piled back into the car and started back to Utah. The trip back wasn't too bad, we stopped for ice cream to celebrate my birthday ( oh yeah, I'm like and adult or whatever now) and poor Allison (my one year old 1st cousin once removed aka the daughter of my cousin) experienced her first bloody lip and first time throwing up. Aside from that though it was a mostly uneventful adventure. We got back in Provo around 2:00 am on Wednesday but unfortunately I had a genealogy project that was due the next morning that I had been unable to finish so I stayed up working on it. I crawled into bed at 7:00 in the morning to sleep and dragged myself out at 9:00 to turn in my project and to attempt to attend my classes. That evening I went with Autumn and Hannah to the Mr. BYU show, which was pretty good. All of the contestants were pretty talented. Autumn had also made me a banana cream pie for my birthday which we devoured while talking about Christmas.

Speaking of Christmas, it's darn cold here now! Not like unbearable but defiantly chilly. I knew that it would get cold but the weird thing is that it happened pretty much overnight. This morning I woke up and there was snow on the mountains. Now I realized that in most places, particularly at home you'd be all like "who care, the mountains always have snow" but these mountains are super close, like literally within walking distance and yesterday they didn't have snow on them. I'm not sure you guys are gathering how big of a deal it is that it magically became cold, so let me better explain by showing you the weather report in the paper yesterday.

Look at this! So Tuesday, 73, ehh that's a little colder than normal but whatever. Wednesday, 61, well... it is the fall and it is raining. Thursday, 49? What? It went from 73 degrees to 49 degrees in two days! Like I said, shorts and t-shirts to jackets and jeans overnight. It's kind of funny though, seeing how bundled up people are you can kind of tell where they're from. People from Utah and other similar places are wearing jackets and maybe a scarf or so but people from Texas and whatnot are shivering in a full winter coat and gloves.

I've done a few other interesting thing since I last properly updated (which was what like a month ago?) but I feel like they'd take a long time to write about so I won't. Maybe later. I'll try to be better about the whole writing regularly thing. Hopefully it'll happen.

Provo Rain

"Are you alright, colonel?"
"Yeah, I'm fine... except... it's a terrible day for rain."
"But... what do you mean? It's not raining."
  "Yes it is."

Stars or whatever

This is apparently what happens when a sick, sleep deprived, seventeen year old waits for astronomy to start.  Yeah... I don't really get it either...
So I realized that I haven't properly updated this blog deal of mine in roughly *looks at pocket watch* 1000 years but by Wednesday all of my assignments, exams, and essays will be done and maybe if I'm lucky I won't be sick anymore. So, I'll try to catch you all up on the big detail then.
In other new though, I saw this monster in my room the other night. It's kind of hard to tell from the picture, but it was pretty massive. Also it was hairy, which isn't something I've typically observed in spiders back home. Anyway, the point is, it was kind of gross.

Am I the only weird person out there who occasionally looks for and reads anti-something you support/believe in statements and articles even though I find them absolutely agravating?

Week one.. again

I really haven't been in the mood to update lately, but my blog is so out of date it's starting to look like Katy's, so I guess I had better get updating

Friday nothing particularly remarkable happened. In the morning my dad and I went down to the bus station. I didn't particularly feel like interacting with all of the wonderful individuals that ride the bus so I mostly read a few articles I needed to finish for my American Heritage Class.

Sometime between Friday night and Saturday morning I did find one interesting character however, a 65 year old "Gypsy" from Seattle. She wasn't actually like a full fledged gypsy but she described herself as one and proceeded to tell me all about her life story that lead up to her currently having no house, causing her to live currently in her car which she was returning to in Reno. I got to Provo around 8:00 am I think and proceeded to start to walk to my apartment... 28 blocks away. After I had walked a few, I gave up, called Aaron and asked him to come help me. We ended up meeting at the Provo library, which was block 14, half way. It had taken me about 45 minutes to walk there. Once Aaron got there, he hoisted my huge suitcase above his head and we walked the rest of the 14 blocks in about 20 minutes...... Someday I'll have at least moderate strength.
After I had checked in I unpacked my dishes and a few more things and then Aaron and I went to go eat at the cannon center, pick up my books, and find where our classes were.  After that we tracked down Autumn but she was on her way to work so we only saw her for a minute. So we ended up going back to my lovely apartment (it's like super decked out, I'll have to take some pictures of it once my roommates put all of the furniture back) and watched part of a movie. About half way through my roommate Alexis showed up with her family and about everything that had once been for sale in Wal Mart. We talked to them for awhile, and they all seemed pretty cool. Alexis' mom looks like Emma Claudfield too.
While they were all putting stuff away, Aaron and I decided to go to the store since neither of us had any food so we headed off to Buy Low. We stalked up and then rushed home since we had already made plans with Seth to go see Green Lantern at the Dollar Theater. When we got to the theater however the line was incredibly long and by the time we got to the front the show time we had come to see had already started so we got tickets for a later showing, stopped at the creamery where Seth bought a half gallon of ice cream (on the way to the theater he was telling Aaron and I about how it was his only true love) and we went back to my apartment to finish watching the movie that Aaron and I had been watching earlier. When we got back to my apartment however, Alexis' grandma was there...alone... watching t.v. She said that the rest of the family had gone to dinner and she had decided to stay here. The three of us sat in the kitchen somewhat awkwardly eating ice cream while she watched the end of "Failure to Launch". Seth also broke my spoon.
That went on for a little while but we decided to leave the awkwardness and go to Aaron's apartment to watch the rest of the movie since his complex has a commons area with a t.v. When we go there however there was a bunch of girls singing Disney songs and show tunes. Naturally, we abandoned our movie and joined them. When Autumn got off work she even abandoned her zombie dance party and sang with us too. We sang for some time but then the four of us (Seth, Aaron, Autumn, and I) headed off for the movie. I have to say I liked it pretty well. When we got out of the movie a big storm was just starting and we ended walking home in it which I have to say, was pretty awesome. My bread had ended up at Aaron's apartment and his top ramen was still at mine so he and I stopped by my place and got the ramen, and the went to his place where I got bread. After I had my bread, I went home and went to bed.

I didn't really do anything all that exciting on Sunday. I went to church, got acquainted with my new ward, and my roommates and I took some pictures afterward. After ward prayer though, some guy named Ben followed us home on a dare. We invited him in for some of the cookies we had left over and he ended up staying for about an hour.

Monday was the first day of classes and I had Genealogy, Book of Mormon, Astronomy, and Biology. So far they all seem pretty good. After class I went to the book store to pick up a binder and my sports pass. While I was there I ran into Seth and Aaron and we talked for a little while before I went home. That afternoon I went to FHE, where we met our individual groups and played charades. That evening it was stormy again but it didn't end up down pouring like it had on Saturday. Being the foolish young person that I am and having no class on Tuesday until 4:00 I stayed up watching "Definitely Maybe."

Like I said earlier,Tuesday I didn't have any class until 4:00 and I had stayed up late the night before so I didn't end up doing much all day. The class that I have on Tuesdays and Thursdays in American Heritage. What we ended up doing that day was writing our own syllabus, including learning objectives and some of the assignments. It was kind of interesting. On my way to class, I ran into Aaron at the library. You know, I've noticed the same thing here that I noticed at MP. Even though there are like thousands or people here running around you end up finding people you know around quite often. Tuesday evening after class Aaron and I went to the supposed club fair that happens every Tuesday but there wasn't anything going on so we ended up exploring the library and "fighting" over which was better, Halo or Zelda. We explored the library for an hour or so and then I went home and watched "The Proposal" with my other roommate Karen.

Wednesday was a pretty typical morning. I went to class, and nothing particularly exciting went on. That evening though Aaron and I broke up. What with not having class until 4:00 again, I ended up staying far too late again talking to Karoline and Austin and watching "Because I Said So."

Thursday I went to class in the afternoon and checked out the move in sale at the bookstore. Then Autumn and I decided to check out this ink blot study but it took forever and we decided to abandon it and get snow cones and watch the new "Alice in Wonderland" instead.

Friday was my first day of martial arts class, and that was interesting. We didn't really do much though, just talk about the class and go over the syllabus. It looks like it's going to be intense though. After that class I went to my science classes and then went home. I read my textbook for a while before I went to hang out with Hannah and Autumn. We headed back to campus to go to the carnival that was going on there, but it ended up being majorly disappointing. The one aspect of the fair that they did capture though was the price range. You had to pay money to get in and then if you wanted to do anything else it cost more money. We found Seth and Aaron there, and the five of us left pretty soon after we arrived. We went back to my apartment where we watched "The Prestige."

Saturday was the first football game of the season, which we won by one point. After the game Autumn and I decided to walk to Borders to check out their closing sales. On the way we discovered the amazing and fantastic strip mall for the elegant and wealthy. Everything there was far to fancy and far to expensive. It was fantastic. They had a toy store there that looked like something I have only seen before in movies. We debated eating there but it was to uppity for our meager budgets so we collected all the amazing treasures we had collected at Borders, took one last look, and headed home. On the way home a lot of potential plans were formulated. Hannah wanted to know if we wanted to do something, and so we decided to meet up at Panda Express but on the way back we decided that we weren't really that hungry so we decided to just meet  back at wyview. On our way back Aaron also inquired of us to see if we wanted to go swimming but we ended up not doing that either. After that the plan became to go see Super 8, but by the time the 5 of us (Seth was with us too) got there, the line was incredibly long and the movie started soon. We actually didn't end up really doing anything. Hannah and Autumn then decided that they were indeed hungry so so we went to some sandwich shop type deal where they got something to eat. After that we went to Blockbuster, looked at the movies for awhile, and then went home.

Sunday was a pretty typical day. I went to church, did my religion homework, and my roommates and I made Chicken Alfredo for dinner. The one abnormality however was that I think my roommates got drunk or whiffed some drugs or something. The guy that followed us home last Sunday came over again, somewhat randomly and we read "All of my Friends Are Dead." Up until that point everything was fine, but after that... I don't exactly know what went on. My roommates kept yelling and howling, and laughing at absolutely nothing.  Two also apparently became the funniest number to ever grace the Earth. After about forty minutes, it transitioned from funny to amusing to awkward to just annoying.Eventually I just left them and Ben (poor guy, I don't know why he didn't just leave) in their state of mental impairedness or whatever it was. I escaped to Autumn's and we walked down to Blockbuster so she could return the movies she had gotten the other night. Well, there was no way I was going back to deal with my intoxicated associates and their friend (Alexis' friend came over later) that night, so I stayed the night at Autumn's.

Early Monday morning, while I was at Autumn's apartment, we decided to watch a million movies. We only ended up watching "Room 1408" and "500 days of Summer" though before we went to bed. Later that morning I had a magnificent breakfast of bacon, eggs, french toast and a smoothie before going home to work on some homework. After the homework was done I went back over to Autumn's where I watched the end of "The Fountain", possibly on of the strangest movies I've ever seen, and "Drag me to Hell". Later that evening we played Ultimate Frisbee with a group of kids, took the rest of the movies back to Blockbuster, got ice cream to celebrate Labor Day, and then finally watched "Super 8 with Seth and Aaron. Some crazy people might disagree with this but Super 8 is pretty much "E.T." meets "How to Train Your Dragon". I got home and was ready to go to bed but there were a million people at my apartment who were apparently getting ready to have a dance party. Not particularly being in the mood to participate, I wandered around Wyview for about a half an hour until they all went away.

Tuesday I didn't do a whole lot. Went to my liberal American Heritage class, ran down to Buy Low to save Aaron who had forgotten to take a backpack to the store with him, and went to a cookie party at Hannah's friend's house. It was an interesting party. It didn't last too long, maybe an hour or so, and a bunch of random people from the area were there. I guess Hannah's friend had just gone knocking on anyone and everyone's door seeing if they wanted to come. That's about all the adventures I had that day. After the party I just went home and did homework.

Today there was a club fair type deal on campus, which was interesting. I got few free things including an amazing pen that I really like writing with. Maybe that'll motivate me to finally write the letters I've been meaning to write.

So, that's everything I've been up to since I left. Not really that much, and yet I still managed to write about 10 pages about it. I'll try to update more often so that doesn't happen. That or stop leading such a darn fascinating life. No guarantees on that though.
